Classification of fairness measures for local and metropolitan area networks

چکیده
As appeared in Computer Communications WW lodek Dobosiewicz Pawee l Gburzy nski y Vincent Maciejewski z present a model for measuring the fairness in LANs and MANs. Abstract Fairness of very high-speed networks became a focus of interest since the moment Distributed Queue Dual Bus (dqdb) gained popularity. Several papers exposed its unfairness; at the same time, many researchers argued that this unfairness is purely hypothetical. In our opinion, this controversy resulted from the absence of any systematic approach to what fairness is. We introduce a systematic classiication of fairness measures in local and metropolitan area networks. A \points of view" approach to fairness is proposed: depending on the point of view the observer's perception of fairness may diier signiicantly. This phenomenon is illustrated with the example of a simple (and apparently unfair) protocol.

Extending the Fasnet protocol to WDM rings for short-term fairness control
Single-hop wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical ring networks operating in packet mode are a promising architecture for the design of innovate Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). They allow a cost-effective design, with a good combination of optical and electronic technologies, while supporting features like restoration and reconfiguration that are essential in any metropolitan scenari...

متن کاملRINGOSTAR – An Evolutionary Performance Upgrade of Optical Ring Networks
INTERNET traffic volumes are growing and require the transmission capacity of the underlying infrastructure to be continuously extended. A closer look at this infrastructure reveals that the Internet architecturally relies on a three level hierarchy consisting of backbone networks, metropolitan area networks, and local access networks. The national or international backbone networks will provid...
متن کاملA Study of Fairness for ATM ABR Service Based on Doubly Finite Queu
A general goal of the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network is to support connections a cross Local-Area Networks (LANs), Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). However, in Available Bit Rate (ABR) service, different treatments are offered according to different Round Trip Times (RTTs) of connections. To improve the above unfairness, this study presents Doubly Finit...
متن کاملAn Almost Optimal MAC Protocol for All-Optical WDM Multi-Rings with Tunable Transmitters and Fixed Receivers
This paper considers SRR, an almost optimal collision-free access scheme for all-optical packet networks based on WDM multi-channel ring topologies providing slotted channels for transmissions to disjoint subsets of destination nodes. Only a channel inspection capability and local status information are required at nodes in order to implement the access protocol. Since SRR is not able to enforc...
